The Corbin Family Blog Finally Up and Running

With the help of cousin Ryan Corbin, we are finally up with a blog for the Corbins and allied families through the Travis Doleman Corbin (Travers Downman Corbin) line that ended up in Newton County, Indiana and Newaygo and Mecosta Counties, Michigan. We are interested in sharing family history information, updates, family get togethers and happenings, joys and sorrows, etc. This blog is as much an attempt to connect our wide-spread family (I have first cousins in Arizona, California, Alaska, Colorado, Michigan, and who knows where else, so we wanted to make a way for us to share and reconnect despite all the miles and all the years.). So, we look forward to the stories, memories and all the reconnecting. This is also certainly open to the Davis, Forwood, Stimer, and all the other connected families. We look forward to hearing from everyone. Have at it, kin folk!

The picture was taken in Lowell Corbin's garage during the combined family reunion about July 15, 2006 in Tustin, Michigan. This picture includes Ivan Garth Corbin, Dennis and Sean Corbin, Alan and his wife, Sam, Corbin. Missing were Ann Corbin Visser and Mary Corbin Kartes, the other two Garth Corbin kids.

Where are all the comments? Guess I will have to be the first to get my feet wet. Greetings from the panhandle of Florida.

Garth passed along your blog address so I could check it out. I'll pass along the address to the family e-mail list that I have. -- Uncle Lowell

This is a great idea, and I hope there will be lots of response. My mother, Frances Elsie Stimer, was a Corbin, and I have some of the material she accumulated in trying to keep track of the family. I hope to share it with others when the next Corbin reunion is held in 2008 here at our farm home near Pierceton, IN.

Hi. This blog is a great idea. I'm Deanna (Dee) Ray. Shirley Corbin Bruce Price was my grandmother and Bob and Mary Bruce are my folks. Hey Garth, where in Florida do you live? My husband and I live in Dunnellon in the winter.

This is great. I am one of Richard and Jean Corbin's daughters. Can you name the people in the photo? I am sorry I missed the reunion, I really don't want to miss the next one.
Dee: I have always been told I look like "Aunt Shirley". I wonder if that is your grandmother? (I will ask my mother.)
Thanks, Uncle Lowell, for passing on the information.

Hi, Dee,

Yes, this is a good idea, but it would be better if the Blog would accept my password!

Your Grandmother, Shirley, was only three years older than I so she was really more like a Sister.

To answer your question; we live in DeFuniak Springs which is mid-way between Talahassee and Pensacola just off Interstate 10. We used to live in Zephyrhills before moving to Georgia and then here.

It's great to see who all has logged on. Dad, I'm proud to see you were the first!. Colleen, the people in the old picture are our great-grandfather and grandmother, Francis Marion Corbin and Hester Lorraine Herring, Hester's sister Laura and FM's sister (I'll post all the names when I get home and can make sure).

By the way, Dee, my family and I live in DeLand, FL, so if you ever head to Daytona or Orlando, let us know and we can get together! Ivan

In the "Corbin Family Connections," the two people on the left are Francis Marion Corbin (son of John Wesley Corbin and Leah Elizabeth Martin)and Hester Lorraine Herring (daughter of Henry Asa Herring and Amanda Graves). It is a photo from their wedding day on January 30, 1897 near Kentland, Newton County, IN. The two women on the right: back is Laura sister of Hester and in front is Edith Corbin (Mattox), sister of FM Corbin

Congratulations on a great family blog. Thanks Lowell for sending me the link to it. I have wanted to do something like this for the descendants of Henry Asa and Amanda E (Graves) Herring for a long time.

The picture of Francis Marion and his sister Edith, and Hester and her sister Laura was actually taken in 1898. According to the on-line Newton County, Indiana Marriage Records, Marion F. Corbin and Hester Herring were married on January 30, 1898. Gladys Vivian (Corbin)Davis and Loraine (Stimer) Engelberth sent me a copy of this picture several years ago which I have been taking to the Herring Family Reunions ever since I received it. Laura was my grandmother and my mother was named Hester after her sister.

I would love to have come to your family reunion last year, but we had to much going on that weekend including my annual physical appointment on friday that had been put off from June. maybe I can come to the one in 2008, I sure hope so. Dennis

Dennis, it's good to have you join us and we'd love to see you in 2008. Thanks for the correction on FM and Hester's marriage date. I had never made the correction in my info, but also saw the Newton County record. I also have an old copy of their marriage license and confirmed that it was 1898. Again, welcome on board with the rest of us cousins.

This is great! I've just been reading the comments and enjoy the opportunity to catch up a little with some of my relatives I've never met! It encourages me to get busy with some more genealogical research, for I know there have to be some connections to the Corbins in western Indiana--I just haven't yet been able to establish contact. I hope I can get some good info and personal contacts before the reunion next summer here at our farm.

Here I am again, but after reading the comments I want to invite everyone interested to attend the next "Corbin, etc." reunion to be held at the Bill and Loraine Engelberth farm near Pierceton, Indiana on July 12, 2008. Just let me know so we'll know how many to expect. We're looking forward to meeting some relatives we've never seen before. BTW, I was named for my grandmother Hester Lorraine Josephine Jane Herring Corbin--my mother spelled my name with only one "r" but that's okay. In addition, my middle name is Leah, which was the name of my great-grandmother Corbin.
